CANVEY ISLAND - hardback book
by Geoff Barsby   (about the author)

Currently out of stock

Archaeologists suggest that when the Romans came to Canvey and created its red hills it was perhaps still part of the mainland, but through the slow sinking of the land and rising of sea levels had become no less than five separate islands by Anglo-Saxon times. The creek it shared with neighbouring Benfleet was deep enough for the keels of Viking invaders. In the Middle Ages a malarial marshland, was won back from the sea by the enterprise of the Cavalier, Sir Henry Appleton, with financial and engineering backing of the Dutchman, Joas Croppenburg. Dutchmen stayed on as farmers and were an important element in the first real community.
Smugglers too, were an important element in the 18th and 19th centuries. By the end of the 19th century, trippers had replaced smugglers and the entrepreneur Frederick Hester was buying cheap farmland to sell off as plots for holiday homes; he built a spectacular Winter Garden and a tramway for trippers, but in 1905 he went bankrupt.

CANVEY ISLAND

In this lively book, the island's entire past is reviewed, from Roman salt-pans to the new sea wall and brought vividly to life in a profusion of remarkable old photographs.

About The Author : Geoff Barsby

Geoff Barsby was born in 1945 to parents who were islanders themselves, as were their parents before them. He has lived all his life on Canvey and is a well known local figure, both for his efforts in charity work in the community, for which he has won a National Caring Award, and as the publisher of a long established local newspaper. As well as The District News, his publishing interests include a local history magazine, Years Gone By, which includes photographs from his own extensive collection.

A keen participant in many sports in his younger years, he encouraged youngsters on the island to apply their energies to football by starting the very first teams of Canvey Mites F.C. which he supported financially in the early years. He has also played an active part as a fund-raising organiser for the P.T.A.s of Canvey schools and he still works very hard raising funds through The District News Registered Charity to help island doctors and residents with medical equipment.
